Getting in contact with refugees
You wish to give confidence to refugees?
Then you are welcome as a volunteer on the Lighthouse Welcome Center Team!
The Lighthouse Welcome Center is a meeting place for volunteers and refugees.
It takes place in a room in a refugee accommodation center at Heimeranplatz.
The people living in the accommodation center have only recently arrived in Munich. They often have few connections and many questions about life in Munich.
What is your role?
- You warmly welcome people and listen attentively – like a good neighbor.
- You help them find their way around, for example, using public transportation or finding clubs and associations.
- You can offer activities you enjoy, or you can decide together what you'd like to do: play cards, listen to music, or simply chat.
What's in it for you?
You're never alone: As a volunteer, you'll always work at least in pairs.
Intercultural exchange: You'll meet people from different cultures and you can share your experiences.
Practical integration: You'll help residents using your everyday knowledge. For example, you can answer questions about daily life, customs, and dealing with authorities in Munich.
Help in small ways: You'll experience how important a simple game of UNO or a friendly chat can be for people in difficult situations.
Flexibility: You decide when and how you volunteer. Typically, it's once a week for 2 hours.
A volunteer coordinator will introduce you, support you, and guide you. You'll also receive free training.
